Six Flags Entertainment Corporation has announced that it will close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, Maryland, after the 2025 operating season comes to an end.
The approximately 500-acre property will be marketed for redevelopment as part of Six Flags’ portfolio optimization program.
Six Flags President and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan.”
He continued, “After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”
Zimmerman went on to say that this was a difficult decision as it will have an impact on the employees of Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor. Six Flags America has about 70 full-time employees, who will be provided with severance and benefits.
The closure of Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor is not expected to have a significant material impact on the company’s financial results in 2025.
The parks’ final operating day will be Sunday, November 2nd, 2025. All 2025 season passes and tickets will be honored throughout the final operating season at Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor.
This news comes shortly after it was revealed that Superman: Escape from Krypton had been permanently closed at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
According to the park’s president, Jeff Harris, the decision to close the attraction — which had been down for refurbishment since September — came down to an inability to repair the attraction. According to Harris, “Some of the parts are obsolete. It’s really tough to even get parts to keep it alive.”
We’ll be on the lookout for additional updates from Six Flags and more. In the meantime, stay tuned to DFB for the latest theme park news!

Interesting. Tenured attractions are experiencing intense competition entering the field in Texas and Oklahoma. This is the next big growth market for some as guest switch from cruising to the next new thing, and the new attractions coming around the country will be fighting for you vacation dollar. The value of the land in this case has a higher ROI than the risk of running a water park/theme park.
