The One Big Announcement We Expect Disney to Make in May

The Walt Disney Company is holding its second quarter earnings call on May 7th, 2025, and it’s safe to say expectations have shifted.

As we continue to figure out how the 2025 tariffs and potential trade wars between the United States might affect the Disney Parks and The Walt Disney Company as a whole, we might get some clarity soon. With Disney’s latest earnings call coming up quickly in May, we’re expecting the company to comment on this topic, specifically.

According to several reports, Disney’s stock is having a rough year, with a 25% decrease in 2025, making it the third-worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Unfortunately for the company — and its shareholders — industry experts a predicting it to get worse.

Barron’s and UBS analyst John Hodulik believe the current presidential administration’s tariffs and a looming economic slowdown could lead to “lower earnings forecasts for the next two fiscal years due to recession concerns.”

Estimates are generous in the short-term and Hodulik feels that “the current quarter ‘will reflect resilient demand across the parks,’ as well as ‘solid sports advertising’ for Disney’s ESPN networks.” However, a trade war could have some damaging long-term effects that will affect “Disney’s most sensitive revenue streams.”

Mix in growing concerns about the health of the box office and other non-economic factors, and there is some cause for concern. It’s worth noting, however, that, according to Barron’s, “Wall Street remains mostly bullish on Disney, despite the broader headwinds. Of the 33 analysts that cover the stock, two dozen have a Buy rating on Disney compared to eight Hold recommendations and one Sell.” The publication also added that Disney could get a boost from its cruise line.

Per the report, “analysts at MoffettNathanson Research also think that the market has already priced a recession into Disney’s stock, adding that investors may be ignoring Disney’s focus on ramping up profitability for its streaming businesses”.

All in all, it’s obvious that the impending financial trends of The Walt Disney Company could use some clarity, and that’s typically what an earnings call tends to focus on.

Therefore, we fully expect Disney to revise economic forecasts at the second quarter earnings call, while directly addressing how the company plans to navigate a possible recession.
