Magic Kingdom is about to be VERY busy — and we don’t mean with people.
A lot of construction will be coming to the park soon, as Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island get converted into a Cars-themed area as part of a Frontierland expansion. Disney has plans to also build a Villains-themed land in the park, too. PLUS Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed for a whole YEAR probably due to all the construction, but also for updates of its own. Well, ahead of that closure, we just spotted some NEW construction in Magic Kingdom. Folks, it’s really happening!
We noticed that there was a backdrop placed behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland in Magic Kingdom. Now, what is it hiding?
There’s something going on behind it and the backdrop is not doing a great job of hiding the construction we can CLEARLY see. The backdrop is almost sheer (like Disney is just teasing us at this point).
You can also see the backdrop if you’re riding Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, too.
A closer look even shows some construction vehicles in place. Could this be the beginning of all the construction that’s about to happen to create the two new Cars rides and Villains land? Or does this have something to do with additions to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad itself? All we know is it looks like Disney is certainly building SOMETHING here.
It is likely the ride might get some new additions once it closes for its yearlong refurbishment, so we can’t say for certain what this construction is for. But something is definitely happening in Magic Kingdom, and it’s just the first sign of construction we expect to see there.

Surely Disney picked the wrong contractor for this project. A Disney inspired scrim could have been used to protect the guest experience. Bad show Disney…
This is upsetting to see just before our trip. This will be my grandson’s first trip to Disney and we have spent an exorbitant amount of money for our family to visit after Thanksgiving. I understand you have to compete with Universal but not during the Holiday time frame. Very disappointed!!!!!
I’m excited to see that they are getting the ball rolling! A little surprised that they didn’t completely cover the construction work/equipment, but we’re always trying to catch a peek behind those construction walls anyway! They’re just making it a little easier lol!
