We’re in the middle of hurricane season in Central Florida, and that means we’re keeping a close eye on the weather.
For the past several days, we’ve been watching a few possible storm systems around the United States to see if anything develops into a major storm. Currently, Tropical Storm John is strengthening off of the Pacific coast of Mexico, but on top of that, there’s a developing system to keep an eye on in the Atlantic.
Currently, there’s a “disturbance” in the Northwestern Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico that has an 80% chance of forming into a cyclone over the next 48 hours. This broad area of low pressure is bringing showers and thunderstorms currently, but it’s gradually becoming better organized.
Regardless of development, some areas should be on watch today for storm conditions. Over the next few days, it’s expected that this system will produce heavy rains over portions of Central America, so those located in those areas should prepare for the incoming weather.
For impact in the days after that, the system is forecast to strengthen before hitting portions of the northern and northeastern Gulf Coast. That area of impact includes portions of the Florida panhandle and Florida’s western coast. The National Hurricane Center recommends that residents of those areas monitor the latest storm updates.
UPDATE: Predictions now show that the system could likely strengthen to a hurricane on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Those in the path of the storm will want to begin preparations.
